Job Description:

Smith and Byford are looking for an enthusiastic individual to train as an apprentice to become a fully qualified Electrical Operative in Installation, Testing and Inspection within the Electrical Department. The role includes gaining practical experience alongside established engineers - This experience will primarily be gained whilst testing domestic properties and conducting small-scale installation projects over the course of a period of four years. The role provides experience in installation of a variety of containment and cabling and carrying out Electrical Installation Condition Reports, which will include fault finding of domestic and commercial systems in a large number of properties. The role includes the opportunity to progress within a well-established growing company with excellent future prospects.

Main responsibilities:

  • The Apprentice’s central task is to assist our Installation and Testing Engineers working on various sites on the fixed wiring systems. This may involve doing basic tasks such as working with tools and working independently from the Engineer at times on installation tasks that require less skill or experience. As the Installation Apprentice progresses, they will be given more independence in completing tasks. There will be arrangements at times to assist other departments at Smith and Byford.
  • To assist fully trained Testing engineers on day-to-day testing of the fixed wiring within various social housing properties and communal/commercial buildings.
  • Work as part of a team and undertake Health and Safety and other training as required.
  • Be aware of risk assessments and method statements relating to own area of work and to work in safe manner taking account other people’s health and wellbeing.
  • Apprentices are responsible for learning all procedures for the installation and testing of the electrical system as per required regulations and safety requirements.

Academic Qualifications:

  • Min. 3 GCSEs (Grades A - C or 4 and above) - Two of which must be in Maths and English

Personal Qualities:

An individual needs to have a good work ethic, the ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own and be keen to learn within a thriving industry. Communication is key as part of our business; therefore, great communication skills are a must.

Progression Route:

College Apprenticeship:

  • Apprentice - Year 1 – Gaining Familiarity with Industry Terms, Tools and Procedures and Assisting Engineers with small tasks under their supervision
  • Apprentice – Year 2 – Further Knowledge obtained of the Industry Standards and More Responsibility Bestowed by Engineers, undertaking Day-to-Day Tasks under supervision.
  • Apprentice - Year 3 and 4 – Testing and Inspection Theory and Practices will be apparent alongside the element of filling in the appropriate paperwork for works completed. Conducting identified remedial works and carrying out works independent of the Training Engineer for later Review

  • Approved – An approved Electrician will be able to undertake any and all installation works without the need for a Supervising Engineer – This will also extend to carrying out suitable testing and inspection of both installed works and that of existing installations.
