Description:

Smith and Byford are looking for an enthusiastic individual to train to become a fully qualified Gas Engineer starting out in our Installation Department. The role includes gaining practical experience alongside established engineers on multiple projects who are primarily involved in the installation of plumbing/repairing pipework, new heating components, hot and cold-water systems and gas work. The role also provides experience in maintenance, servicing and fault finding of heating systems in a large number of social housing properties. The role includes the opportunity to progress within a well-established growing company with excellent future prospects.

Main responsibilities:

  • The Apprentice will assist our installation engineers working on various sites on central heating installations & gas related work. During this process you will be able to assist engineers & gain evidence to further your college training, while collecting onsite evidence working with S&B engineers to complete NVQ level 2 Plumbing. There will be arrangements at times to assist other departments at Smith & Byford.
  • This may involve doing basic tasks such as working with tools and working independently from the Engineer at times on installation tasks that require less skill or experience. As the Installation Apprentice progresses, they will be given more independence in completing tasks. There will be arrangements at times to assist other departments at Smith and Byford
  • Assist fully trained Gas engineers on day to day activities installing plumbing and heating equipment e.g pumps, boiler components, pipework and repairs and maintenance. Also carrying out LGSR/annual gas checks
  • Work as part of a team and undertake Health and Safety and other training as required
  • Be aware of risk assessments and method statements relating to own area of work and to work in safe manner taking account other people’s health and wellbeing
  • Apprentices are responsible for learning all procedures for installing Heating systems as per required regulations and safety requirements

Academic Qualifications:

  • Min. 3 GCSEs (Grades A – C or 4 and above) - two of which must be in Maths & English

Personal Qualities:

An individual needs to have a good work ethic, the ability to work as part of a team as well as on their own and be keen to learn within a thriving industry. Communication is key as part of our business; therefore great communication skills are a must.

Progression Route

College Apprenticeship:

  • Apprentice - Year 1 & 2 - Assisting engineer on daily tasks (plumbing)
  • Apprentice - Year 3+ (moving to gas side) Assisting engineer on gas maintenance tasks and carry out small tasks independently

On completion of the Apprenticeship the apprentice must be able to undertake the full range of duties, in the range of circumstances appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to the standard set by the industry.
