Job description

As a quantity surveyor, you will learn to manage all costs relating to building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. You will work in an office or on site and you will be involved in a project from the start.

You will assist to minimise the cost of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. This includes ensuring statutory building regulations are achieved. This will involve preparing estimates and costs of the work and when the project is in progress and you will track of any variations to the contract that may affect costs and create reports to show profitability. Activities could include:

  • Seeing what a client needs and if their plans can be realistically achieved
  • Working out quantities and costs of materials, time and labour
  • Negotiating contracts and work schedules
  • Giving advice on legal matters, including risks and disputes
  • Keeping an eye on sub-contractors and how construction is coming along
  • Writing reports on how much is being spent and preparing accounts for payment
  • Keeping up with the latest construction methods and materials
  • Staying in line with health and safety and building regulations
  • Understand the importance of customer service
  • Record and report information accurately either internally or externally

Qualifications or Required Experience:

Experience in business studies, mathematics and or construction activities would be beneficial but not essential.

Qualifications / Knowledge:

  • Committed to achieving a Level 3 qualification Surveying Technician (RICS)
  • 3 GCSEs at grades 1-4 (A*-C) including English and Mathematics
  • 2 A-levels or the equivalent
  • Problem Solving skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • Punctuality with the means to attend the workplace
  • Good ICT skills with an understanding of Excel, Word and social media
  • Able to interact with others
  • Ability to work alone using own initiative
