This opportunity is available through our supply chain with O'Connell Contracting

O'Connell Contracting is offering an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Engineer to join our growing civil engineering and construction team. This role provides hands-on experience working on live infrastructure, groundworks and enabling projects across the South East, beginning in Eastfields and then London and the South East as projects change. The apprenticeship combines practical on-site learning with formal study toward a recognised qualification in Civil Engineering or Construction Management at Level 3/4.

Candidate Requirements

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Possession of a CSCS card (or willingness to obtain one).
  • English and Maths at grade 4/C/Level 2
  • Legal right to work in the UK.
  • Living local to the area (Merton) but open to surrounding boroughs (Sutton, Croydon, Lambeth, Wandsworth, Kingston Upon Thames).

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist the Site Engineer in setting out and surveying works using GPS and total station equipment.
  • Support the implementation of the Quality Assurance (QA) process, including site inspections, test records and as-built data.
  • Help maintain accurate daily site records, progress photos and reports.
  • Aid in checking materials, measurements and setting-out points in accordance with design drawings.
  • Work closely with the Document Controller to ensure current drawings and revisions are used on site.
  • Observe and contribute to site safety inspections, learning how to apply RAMS and other safety procedures.
  • Support subcontractor coordination and logistics planning.
  • Gain an understanding of temporary works, drainage installation, foundations, and road construction.
  • Participate in toolbox talks and site briefings as part of continuous learning and development.
