The big clear out

Manage your move with our simple tips

Getting ready to move means getting your home clear

Dealing with unwanted items and waste early makes a big difference and means you won’t be charged for clearing up after you’ve left.

Here we share three simple steps to help you manage the big clear out.

Make a list

  • Room by room check: Go through each room, including sheds and the garden, and list everything you don’t want to take with you.
  • Sort your stuff: Group items into categories: things to donate, things to sell, and things to dispose of.
  • Identify bulky items: Note down large furniture or appliances that need special collection or extra help to move.
  • Garden clear-up: List any garden waste or items stored outside that need clearing.

Get some help

  • Ask friends or family: See if anyone can help you move or clear larger items.
  • Donation pick-ups: Contact local charity shops to see if they collect furniture or larger donated items.
  • Council bulky waste: Check your council’s website for information on collection services – there might be a charge, but it’s a reliable way to get rid of large items.
  • Skip hire: If you’ve got a lot of mixed waste, consider hiring a skip if it’s an option you can manage.

Get started

  • Start early: Don’t wait until the last minute! Start sorting and clearing rooms as soon as you can.
  • Tackle bulky items first: Arrange collection or removal of large furniture and appliances well before moving day.
  • Clear the garden: Deal with garden waste and outdoor items. Use your local council’s garden waste service or a licensed waste carrier.
  • Bag up waste: Use sturdy bags for general rubbish.
  • Leave it empty and clean: On moving day, check all the rooms, cupboards and the garden to make sure everything’s done.
