Our Money Guidance team is here to help when money worries start to feel overwhelming.
They work alongside residents to offer practical, personalised support with everyday money challenges, from budgeting and managing household costs to energy, debt, and food support. For those who need extra help, and are willing to work with the team, they may also be able to support with food and energy bills, as well as grants for essential items like white goods and beds.
This story shows how a simple conversation and the right support at the right time can make a real difference to someone’s life.
Recognising when extra support was needed
When the Money Guidance team were notified that the resident had moved from Employment and Support Allowance to Universal Credit, we reached out to see how she was coping.
During a conversation with our Money Guidance Officer, Sally shared that she was struggling to make ends meet. She was housebound, felt isolated and disconnected, and did not have the skills or confidence to get online. Everyday challenges felt overwhelming, and their situation was having a real impact on their mental wellbeing.
Working together to find the right solutions
Our Money Guidance Officer listened carefully and worked with Sally to identify practical ways we could help. A referral was made to our Digital Support team, who loaned her a MiFi unit so she could take their first steps online and begin reconnecting with the outside world. When Sally’s fridge unexpectedly broke, we also applied to the Clarion Futures Hardship Relief Fund on her behalf, ensuring she received a new fridge freezer quickly.
With access to the internet and a working appliance, Sally's day-to-day life became more manageable. Being online reduced feelings of isolation, and the financial support relieved immediate pressure.
“This will and has made a difference in my life and mental health to the point I’m still in disbelief at this act of kindness.” - Sally
By acting early and providing joined-up support, we helped improve both her wellbeing and quality of life.
