A mural with meaning: The Urban Fox Project in Waltham Forest

Before The Urban Fox Project began, the alleyway linking Gloucester Road and Clarence Road in Higham Hill was known for fly tipping and graffiti. Despite the heavy footfall, it was a place people passed through quickly rather than enjoyed.

Clarion Futures supported The Urban Fox Project to transform this overlooked space into something vibrant and meaningful. Working with Digital Story Company, Wood Street Walls, Waltham Forest Council and local partners, we helped fund creative workshops, public art, planting and paid training opportunities for young people.

A lasting difference for people and places

Before the project, the young people involved were facing major life transitions with limited opportunities and low confidence. Being trusted with responsibility, paid for their time and supported creatively helped them feel valued, capable and hopeful about their future.

Today, the alleyway is a colourful, welcoming space that residents enjoy and take pride in. The project strengthened community connections, supported mental wellbeing and created opportunities for young people at a crucial moment in their lives. The Urban Fox Project shows how creativity can transform both places and people.

Bringing the story to life

This short film captures The Urban Fox Project in motion, following a curious fox through a reimagined Higham Hill landscape. Inspired by residents’ stories and shaped through community workshops, the animation reflects the creativity, collaboration and confidence that grew throughout the project, showing how art can enrich places, support wellbeing and create new opportunities for young people and families.
