Energy improvement works

Information for residents in homes with low energy efficiency

We are carrying out works to improve the energy efficiency of our residents’ homes through our Sustainable Homes programme.

Our focus is on homes with lower energy efficiency (EPC ratings) to bring them up to an EPC rating of C or above.

We are writing to residents whose homes are eligible – so if you’re visiting this page, you’ll have received a letter and want to find out more.

Here you will find information about the types of works, how we will carry these out, and the benefits to you.

What’s the benefit?

Energy improvement works will help to:

  • Reduce carbon emissions in the environment
  • Reduce heat loss and energy use
  • Improve air quality and temperature inside homes
  • Reduce noise from outside

Did you know?

On average, properties with a ‘D’ EPC rating use 30% more energy than those rated as a ‘C’.

Most heat loss from your home is from:

  • 25% roof
  • 33% walls
  • 18% windows
  • 10-20% floor

Residents who have had these works say:

“I would say to another resident who’s thinking of having the work done to go for it. There may be a little bit of disruption, but the benefit of it is so so so worthwhile.” Emma

“Since this work has been done, it has made such a difference. The house is so much warmer and also in the summer months when it was really hot, it stayed cool.” Viv

“Any disruption is surpassed by what you’re going to get at the end of it.” Alan

Next steps

We’re working in partnership with our trusted contractors: Axis, Cardo, Equans, United Living and Wates, to carry out these works.

  • We are writing to residents whose homes are likely to be a lower rating. If you’ve been sent a letter, the next step is to arrange an appointment with the contractor.
  • The contractor will contact you directly to arrange a survey appointment, to identify your home’s current energy rating (EPC) and find out what energy efficiency works might be needed.
  • The survey takes around two hours.
  • Work may vary from property to property, according to age and condition, so you might not be getting the same work as others in your area.
  • If your home is eligible, a resident liaison officer (RLO) will assist you throughout the works project.

Your home may benefit from one or more of the following improvements:

Solar panels:

Photo voltaic panels capture the sun’s energy and convert it to electricity that you can use in your home.

Loft insulation:

Insulating a loft, attic or flat roof is essential for reducing heat loss. It’s a simple but highly effective way to improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Wall insulation:

By properly insulating walls heat loss is reduced, and less energy is needed to heat the home. Insulation also helps to retain cooler air indoors in the summer. Depending on the type of property, insulation can be installed internally, within the cavity between wall, or externally.

Ventilation:

Controlled air flows help homes stay fresh, dry and healthy. Mechanical ventilation (such as an extractor fan in your kitchen or bathroom) improves air quality and reduces the risk of damp and mould, while reducing heat and energy loss.

Air source heat pumps:

This is a new highly efficient type of heating system. It extracts warmth from the outside and converts it to provide heating and hot water, and is designed to keep your home at a consistent and comfortable temperature.

High-performance windows and doors:

Energy efficient glazing in windows and well insulated doors reduce heat loss, which means fewer draughts, cold spots, and condensation on the inside of windows. It also helps to insulate your home against external noise.
