Let's start the conversation: talking money for a healthier future

Clarion

This Talk Money Week (3-7 November), we're encouraging residents to speak openly about money.

Whether it’s budgeting, pensions, or teaching kids about savings, starting the conversation matters. With cost-of-living pressures rising, our Money Guidance offer is here to help people feel more confident and supported in managing their finances.

Why talking money matters

Talking about money leads to better decisions, stronger relationships, and less stress. It helps build financial resilience and set your family up with good habits. We want residents to keep these conversations going all year round, because feeling in control starts with simply talking about money.

Support to help you talk money

For Talk Money Week, our Money Guidance team shares five simple tips to help you start money conversations and feel more confident.

Talking about budgeting, saving, or future planning can lead to better decisions and stronger relationships - speak to a friend or family member about these steps today!

1. Check what you're entitled to

You might be eligible for financial support, like Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

Use our free, anonymous benefits calculator to find out what you could claim.

2. Review your budget

Budgeting is key to staying in control of your money, especially with rising costs. Take a look at your spending, including regular bills, all expenses, and occasional expenses like gifts. Keeping track, even on a daily basis, can make a big difference.

Try Money Helper's free budget planner to keep track of your spending.

3. Manage household bills

From energy and food to internet and phone bills, make sure you’re getting the best deals. Comparison sites and looking at other providers’ offerings can help you find lower rates. If you're struggling with bills, ask your provider about support options.

Leeds Credit Union also offers helpful savings options like the Christmas Club and Save Through Pay.

5. Get free debt advice

If you’re behind on bills, free and independent debt advice can help you find the best way forward. Always use a free, independent, and financially regulated service.

We partner with StepChange, which offers a quick 60-second check to see how they can help with debt advice.

5. Discover future support

  • We’ve partnered with Lightning Reach, a free and secure online portal connecting you to financial support from over 2,500 organisations, all in one place. Whether you need help with food, clothing, school uniforms, bills, or grants, Lightning Reach makes it easier to find and apply for support matching your personal circumstances. Create your free account on their website to discover the full support available.
