Charging and storing e-bikes and e-scooters safely

Clarion

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming more popular, but if batteries are damaged or not charged properly, they can be a fire risk.

By charging and storing them safely, you can help keep yourself and your neighbours safe.

Where should I store them?

Never store e-bikes or e-scooters in communal areas or in escape routes inside your home. These spaces need to be kept clear in case of a fire.

If you’re storing or charging indoors, think about installing extra smoke alarms nearby. This will give you early warning if something goes wrong.

How should I charge them?

  • Only use the correct charger that came with your bike or scooter or buy a replacement from a trusted seller.
  • Never leave them charging overnight or when you’re not around.
  • Let the battery cool before charging it. If it’s still warm from use, charging it straight away could increase the fire risk.
  • Always place batteries on a hard, flat surface while charging, and keep them away from soft furnishings.
  • Try not to knock or damage batteries - even small impacts can cause problems later.

What else should I do?

Make sure your smoke alarms are working, it’s a good idea to test them regularly. You can find more advice here.
